In the second part of our series exploring our work in the Philippines, we’ll continue to reveal some of the lessons learned through our experiences helping clients grow as leaders. In general, we’ve found the Philippines to be an extremely respectful society. In order to grow leadership in these conditions, we’ve devised strategies that complement rather than contradict the local culture.

 A humbling experience

As a consultant, there is a feeling of being looked up to in the Philippines. In Manila, we’re constantly finding that our clients are enthusiastic about the opportunity to learn, adapt and develop their skills. Given that our clients are so willing to absorb information, learn new things and receive feedback, the process of helping them become strong leaders is particularly fulfilling. It reminds you that when we get it right, our work has the power to create lasting change.

Given that our clients are so willing to absorb information, learn new things and receive feedback, the process of helping them become strong leaders is particularly fulfilling.

Throughout our development sessions, we remain true to our goal of being refreshingly direct. Something that we find our clients are very receptive to. We approach leadership development in the Philippines by covering three broad areas. First, we help to spark passion about moving from ‘showing promise’ to ‘demonstrating excellence’. Then we consider how they can stay true to their cultural roots while adapting their natural, warm service mentality to a more opinionated ‘leading the client’ culture. And finally, we pull it all together by looking at how to live and breathe leadership – rather than merely practice the skills of management.

The Potential Squared difference

Our experience of working in different countries around the world has taught us how to develop culturally sensitive models that drive results in a particular environment. In the Philippines, we combine flying consultants in from Singapore and Hong Kong with starting to use local actors for our programmes, as a way of moving to a more culturally attuned model. Our aim is to create independence for clients, not dependence on external people and skills.

To successfully move away from management and into leadership requires recalibration. The way to do this is to teach our clients to start spending the huge bank of trust they’ve built up over the years, working alongside their customers. It’s our responsibility to ensure they learn how to spend this trust wisely and challenge their clients. By helping them to recognise how a more superior style of being good at something, rather than being more servile ‘order takers’, can increase client trust we can then start to move their client perception scores upwards.  By creating a leadership rather than a follower mindset, we provide them with the tools to engender the position of an expert and lead the demands of their customers.

Intense curiosity about different cultures has allowed us to get close enough to really help our clients. Our values and behaviour make the partnership we have with our clients in the Philippines a natural and energising fit.
